Casey Kaufman lets a low pitch go by against Sonoma State.
ROHNERT PARK --- The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team picked up three victories Saturday, completing a game that was suspended on Friday due to darkness and sweeping a scheduled doubleheader, all against Sonoma State.
After dropping game one 3-6, the Otters (6-2 overall, 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) took the remaining three games from the Sonoma State Seawolves (3-3, 1-3 CCAA) on the road. In the final inning of game two, the Otters rallied to send the game into extra innings, winning it in the eighth 6-5. Stellar pitching from juniors #Angela Cabral# and #Jessica Boyle# and solid defense preserved the win as they shutout the Seawolves 1-0 and 2-0.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh inning after play was suspended on Friday, CSUMB's Boyle completed a two-run rally with an RBI single to send the game into extra innings. Then, freshman designated player #Shea Olds# collected the first hit in her CSUMB career, ending game two with a walk off single in the eighth.
When the game began on Friday, #Casey Kaufman# led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and crossed home after a double to left center by #Ashlee Trotter#. The Otters added two more runs in the bottom of the third after Luna reached base on an error by the pitcher, advanced to second, and scored after right fielder #Homa Shafii# ripped an RBI single up the middle. Trotter walked on four consecutive balls and was replaced by pinch runner #Kristen Rasmussen#. #Rochelle Morales#, in the flex position, entered the game offensively to hit for Shea Olds in the 5 spot. Morales executed a perfect bunt, allowing both runners to advance. #Jill Artoff# hit a ground ball to the first baseman, scoring Rasmussen from third.
Nicole Cordova started the rally for the Seawolves in the bottom of the fifth with a double to right center. With two outs and runners on first and second, Shryle Hawes hit a ball deep to left field, but a miscue by the left fielder allowed both runs to score.
In the top of the seventh, with little sunlight left, Kayla Ledford led off with a double to left center. Torres was able to retire the next batter, however consecutive errors by the infield allowed Ledford to score and runners to reach first and second. With two outs, Hawes hit a single down the left line scoring Cordova and Freiburg. After the hit, the officials suspended the game.
Saturday morning, #Angela Cabral# took over the mound for Torres and recorded the final out of the inning. Seawolves pitcher Brittany Williams, who gave up four hits in six innings of work, was replaced by Simone Brandalise, who recorded the win in game one. Shafii got things started once again leading off with a single up the middle, followed by Trotter's second hit of the game. Artoff reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Shafii. Boyle entered the game to pinch hit and went opposite field, scoring Trotter and tying the game.
The Seawolves threatened in the top of the eighth with bases loaded, but Cabral was able to work out of the jam. After committing an error Friday afternoon, left fielder #Megan Luna# redeemed herself by hitting a double off the left field fence. After Trotter sacrificed Luna to third, Olds ended the game with a walk off single up the middle.
Trotter (2 for 2, RBI, 2 BB) and Shafii (2 for 3, RBI, 2 R) led the Otter offense. Torres (2-0) gave up five runs, all unearned, on four hits and struck out four; while Cabral recorded the win with just one hit in closing the game. #Simone Brandalise# (2-1) received her first loss of the season, giving up five hits and three runs, all earned, in just one and a third inning of work.
The pitching duo of Simone Brandalise (2-2) and #Brittany Williams# (1-0) of the Seawolves silenced the Otters to only two hits and a run in game three, but it proved to be enough as Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the victory 1-0. The Otters scratched out their only run of the game in the top of the third when lead off Casey Kaufman reached base on an error by the pitcher, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by Luna. Williams replaced Brandalise and gave up her only hit to Shafii in the sixth.
Cabral (3-1) continued her strong pitching effort from game two, which finished earlier in the day, with a complete game shutout. She allowed six hits and struck out a season-high eight batters. Cabral and her defense appeared poised on the field after getting out of bases loaded jam in the second, fifth, and seventh innings. Shryle Hawes (2 for 3) and Ashley Eisemann (2 for 4) led the Seawolves offensively.
With the starting lineup slightly altered from the previous games, the Otters proved it would only boost their offense even more. Starting every game in the leadoff position, Kaufman once again proved she can get the job done by getting on base and stealing bases. After an infield single and her second stolen base of the day, Kaufman was sent home after Megan Luna picked up another RBI. Luna's double to left centerfield was her third of the season; which leads the team. In the bottom of the sixth and needing insurance runs, Kristen Rasmussen singled to centerfield and later scored on an RBI single by Marissa Trujillo.
Kristen Rasmussen (2 for 3) led the high powered offense in the final game of the series, with Shafii and Villarin collecting the remaining hits for the Otters. Jessica Boyle (1-1) pitched a gem, giving up only two hits and fanning four batters on the shutout. Dani Lopez (1 for 3) and Ashley Eisemann (1 for 2) had the lone hits for the Seawolves. Brittany Williams (1-1) pitched a complete six innings of work giving up seven hits and two earned runs.
The Otters will continue on the road this week at the Schutt Sports Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. Pool play begins on Thursday with their first game slated to start against Quincy University at 2:30 p.m. and Barry University at 5 p.m.
