SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior #Helen Suarez# scored 22 points and freshman #Devin Riezebos# came off the bench to add a career-best 19 points as the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team fell,85-79, to the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Saturday at the Otter Sports Center in front of a record crowd.
CSUMB dropped to 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and 5-2 overall.
Senior #Dana Andrews# recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and ten rebounds. Junior #Denelle Baker# added 13 points and Riezebos pulled down seven rebounds.
The Warriors jumped out to an 8-0 lead but the Otters answered with their own 8-0 run that ended on a lay-up by Riezebos. CSUMB took their first lead of the game at 12-10 on a basket by junior #Janet Oseguera# with a pass from Suarez.
Warriors Antiwinette Turner put up a layup closed the lead to two, 41-39 right before the end of the first half.
Suarez went on a six-point streak to begin the second half to give the Otters a 47-43 lead.
The Warriors took their first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by Jeannette Rowe, 58-56, at 11:03.
Back-to-back steals by the Otters and baskets by Suarez and Riezebos put CSUMB back on top 62-61.
With six lead changes in six minutes, the Warriors came out on top on a jumper by Lysandra Williams to take a 74-73 lead.
Four free-throws down the final stretch secured the Warriors victory at 85-79.
CSUMB shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field and outrebounded the Stanislaus 33-20.
The Otters took care of the ball much better Saturday night with just 10 turnovers after committing 20 against Chico State on Friday night.
CSUMB hosts William Jessup University in their final game before the winter break on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Otter Sports Center. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
