SEASIDE, Calif
. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season with an upset over  last season's conference champion Chico State , 50-46, on Friday at the Otter Sports Center.

The Otters, who improved their record to 5-1, were picked last in the CCAA Preseason Coaches poll and the Wildcats are favored to repeat as the CCAA regular season champions.

“Tonight we took the first step to being great and that was by believing we can,” said Otter head coach Renee Jimenez. “I am excited for our team; we locked in at the end of the game by getting stops on defense.”

“Defense is what won us the game.”

Senior #Dana Andrews# led the Otters with 21 points while junior #Helen Suarez# added 11 points and four assists.  Junior #Janet Oseguera# pulled down eight boards.

Otters reached the scoreboard first on a jumper by Andrews at the 17:15 mark.  At 9-9, the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run that ended on senior Renee Goldoff making 1-of-2 free throws. CSUMB rallied back to tie it at 15-15 at 5:30 left in the half on Oseguera's two free throws.  The Otters never allowed Chico State to earn a lead larger than four points in the half.

With 19 turnovers combined in the first half, Chico State took a 24-21 lead into the locker room.

CSUMB came out on fire with Andrews connecting on back-to-back three-pointers to begin the second half, giving the Otters a 27-26 lead.

A jumper by Chico State's Natasha Smith sparked a 9-0 run with 15:12 left, but the Otters kept coming back. A 9-3 run that finished on a three-pointer by sophomore #LaShawn Johnson#, her first of the season, tied the game at 40-40.

Suarez's shooting got hot, going on a 5-0 run to give the Otters a 45-40 lead, but the Wildcats answered with a 5-0 run of their own. Andrews stepped up by making a four-point play, after being fouled on a three, to give CSUMB the lead 49-45.

Wildcats freshman Synchro Bull made 1-of-2 free throws to close the lead to 49-46 with just under 3-minutes left.  Junior Denelle Baker added a free-throw to finish the game, 50-46.

The Otters won the battle of the boards in the second half, 20-17.

Both teams shot under 30 percent from the field, and CSUMB outscored the Wildcats at the charity stripe, 17-of-25.

The Otters continue their CCAA opening weekend, welcoming Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night.  Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
