SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team continued its five-game winning streak as the Otters recorded an 87-84 victory over the Chico State Wildcats on Friday at the Otter Sports Center in front of a standing only record crowd.
CSUMB opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season with a 1-0 record as the Wildcats dropped to 2-5 overall (0-1 CCAA). With this victory, the Otters are now 5-0 at home against Chico State.
The Otters had four players score double-digits with junior #Keith Wilson# leading the way with 15. Junior #Dante Green# recorded 14 points, going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Seniors #Jose Sanchez# and #Joe Mitchell# added 12 points apiece. Sanchez had a season-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore #Warren Freeman# made a fade away jumper to get the Otters on the scoreboard. The Wildcats broke a 15-15 tie on a jumper by Chris Sharp and held the lead until the last minute of the first half when junior #Shaun Williams# connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 43-43.
Mitchell's dunk three minutes into the second half gave the Otters a 49-46 advantage.
A layup by Sanchez gave the Otters their largest lead of the game at 56-48.
CSUMB held the lead until Bocian scored back-to-back baskets to take a 59-58 advantage. Green made an old fashion three-pointer to put the Otters back on top, 61-59 at 12:03. After numerous lead changes, the Otters took the final lead of the game when Sanchez connected on a shot from downtown. Junior #Trevor Ray# made back-to-back buckets that raised the Otters lead to 74-69.
Wildcats Roderick Hawkins made the front end of his two free throws, but the Otters answered with Mitchell's slam dunk, 76-70.
The Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to tie the score at 77-77 with 4:23 left.
After a minute of neither team scoring, Monreal made both his free throws, 79-77. Wilson tipped in a missed shot at 2:27 and Chico State responded with a bucket by Junior Russell, 81-79. Monreal's layup raised the Otters lead to 83-79.
Bocian's two free throws closed the Otters lead to 83-81. Mitchell drove to the basket for a flip in at 85-81.
Wildcats Nick Lonnegren's three-pointer brought the game within one point, 85-84, with 35 seconds left.
Wilson went to the free throw line after a Wildcat foul, making the front end of his free throws, 86-84.
Chico State's Josh Jackson missed a three-pointer with only 0:06 on the board and Mitchell got fouled on the rebound to send him to the charity strip, where he went 1-of-2 to clinch the victory, 87-84.

Rob Bishop. “Every conference team comes to play and we learned a valuable lesson tonight: that we have to bring our A game every night. “

CSUMB outrebounded the Wildcats, 32-24, including 13 offensive boards. Both teams shot well from the floor with the Otters leading, shooting a season-high 51.3 percent, while Chico State finished with 50 percent.
The Otters host Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night to conclude the CSUMB Homecoming week. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
