TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the year as they held on to a 72-64 victory against the Academy of Art Urban Knights in their final game of the Cal State Stanislaus Thanksgiving Classic at the Warrior Arena on Saturday, Nov. 29.
Junior #Denelle Baker# scored a team-high 14 points on 4-for-6 from three-point range. Senior #Dana Andrews# led all rebounders with nine boards on top of her 13 points and three steals.
CSUMB's bench racked up 28 points with junior #Lindsay Trout# and freshman #Devin Riezebo# contributing eight points apiece.
AAU jumped out to a 10-4 lead before the Otters tied the game at 16-16 and went on an 8-2 run capped by a basket from junior #Janet Oseguera#. CSUMB held their largest lead of the half, 36-25, on a layup by Riezebo with 3:29 on the board. The Urban Knights rallied back to cut the lead to three points until Oseguera laid one in to finish the half at 38-33.
The Otters came out strong in the second half by extending their lead to 12 on a layup by sophomore #LaShawn Johnson# with 14 minutes to go in the contest.
AAU was on the Otters heels the remaining of the game, but CSUMB never allowed the Urban Knights closer than four points.
The Otters were dialed in from long distance, staying in the contest by shooting 53.8 percent (7-for-12) from beyond the arc. CSUMB was near perfect at the charity line, making 17-of-18 shots.
“These two wins will give us great momentum going into conference,” said co-captain #Dana Andrews#. “We are really coming together and working hard as a team.”
The Otters will host their home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 2 against Bethany University at the Otter Sports Center. Tip-off is schedule for 7 p.m.
