TURLOCK, Calif. – Junior #Janet Oseguera#'s 23 points lifted the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team over the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts, 67-65, on Friday, Nov. 28, in the first game of the Cal State Stanislaus Thanksgiving Classic.
With the victory, CSUMB improves to 2-1 and the Argos fall to 1-4 overall.
Oseguera recorded her first double-double of the season with the addition of 10 rebounds, seven from the offensive end. Senior #Dana Andrews# added 15 points and was perfect at the line (5-5).
For the Argos, senior Tanaia Keyes had 20 points and senior Ashley Wilson added 14 points.
An 11-4 run by the Otters would give CSUMB a 26-19 lead in the first half. The Argos tied the game at 32-32 with 1:40 on the clock. Oseguera's two free throws gave CSUMB a 34-33 advantage into the locker room.
NDNU came out blazing in the second half with a 17-4 run, but two baskets and a free throw by Andrews closed the lead to five at the five minute mark.
The last three and half minutes consisted of four lead changes. A steal by junior #Danielle Baker# set-up an Argos foul to send junior #Helen Suarez# to the line for two. Her two baskets gave the Otters a 64-63 lead at 2:23. A lay-up by Keyes granted NDNU the lead once again. Andrews hit two free throws to make the final lead change of the game. Senior #Aly Tsuchiyama#'s free throw secured a CSUMB victory at 67-65.
The Otters dominated on the boards, outrebounding NDNU 40-29 with a 14-2 offensive rebounding advantage.
"We showed a lot of poise in the second half," said Otter head coach
Renee Jimenez. "We fought back and found a way to win."
"Our post players made huge plays for us today."
CSUMB returns to the court for their final game of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 29, to take on the Academy of Art Urban Knights. Tip-off is at 12:30 p.m.
