CHICO --- While a storm blew outside the gym, the Chico State women rained down threes inside it to beat Cal State Monterey Bay 81-55 Friday evening.
Chico State, (9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference) hit 10 of 26 shots from the three-point line. Four of those were drained by Natasha Smith, who led all scorers with 25. JaNae Westmoreland led the Otters in scoring with 15, going 7-11 from the floor. Westmoreland also led the Otters (2-8, 1-2) in rebounding with seven.
Chico is the second-ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region and ranked no. 22 nationally in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
The Wildcats led from the very start, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before Alma Lopez, who finished with 14 points, swished a 3-pointer to get the Otters on the board. At the end of the first half the Otters trailed 37-21.
Westmoreland scored 12 of the team's first 25 points to keep the Otters in the ball game and the Otters made a strong run in the second half, getting within seven points at 42-35 with scoring bursts from Lopez and Dana Andrews, who finished with 10 points. But Chico would go on another run, building the lead back up to 54-38 with 12 minutes to go. From there, Chico would only increase the lead until the final buzzer sounded.
Saturday, the Otters will face CSU Stanislaus. Stanislaus played San Francisco State on Friday. Heading into the game the The women were 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference. The women's game tips off in Turlock at 5:30 p.m.
