Otters Upset UC San Diego In Double Overtime

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Cal State Monterey Bay's #Steve Monreal# sank two free throws at with four seconds left in double overtime to seal a 97-93 upset victory over UC San Diego Saturday night.

The Otters (4-12 overall and 3-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) were down seven points with just over a minute left when #Juston Willis# made a three-point play and then CSUMB immediately fouled. UC San Diego (9-6, 6-4) failed to convert from the free throw line and #Stephen Becker# hit a three to make it 64-63 with 17 seconds left. CSUMB fouled Jordan Lawley, who hit two both free throws this time, but Augie Johnston (16 points on the night) nailed a three-ball with .3 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The Otters trailed in the first overtime until Jose Sanchez sank a trey to tie it at 77 with 1:11 left. CSUMB and UC San Diego would exchange layups, but the Tritons would miss their final shot attempt in the overtime with three seconds left and the Otters missed their final opportunity as well, sending the game to a second overtime.

#DShon Cannon# (18 points, 9 assists) scored the first five points of the second overtime, putting the Otters ahead 84-83 with two free throws. The Tritons answered with a bucket but Monreal hit a long three to put CSUMB ahead for good at 87-85. With 30 seconds left, #Joe Mitchell#, who led the Otters with 24 points and nine rebounds, would increase the lead to five with a three-point play under the basket. UC San Diego then put Mitchell and Monreal on the line hoping they would miss free throws, but they didn't.

The victory keeps CSUMB in the mix in the CCAA. The Otters have won three of their last four conference games. Friday they face Cal Poly Pomona at home. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m.

Five Otters finished in double figures. Becker hit all five of his shots to finish with 13 points. Monreal scored 11.
