SAN FRANCISCO --- Cal State Monterey Bay led by a little early, a lot late and more than enough at the end to defeat San Francisco State 85-75 on the Gators' court Wednesday night.
The Otters (3-12 overall and 2-7 in conference) were up 39-35 at halftime and still led only 64-58 with 7:42 to go when they went on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes. SFSU (10-6, 5-4) rallied at the end to make the score respectable, but never threatened.
#Joe Mitchell# led the Otters' effort with 20 points and 15 rebounds. #D'Shon Cannon# scored 14 and made six assists; #Augie Johnson# scored 12 and #Jose Sanchez# 10. Alex Thomas led SFSU with 15 points. The Otters travel to La Jolla to play San Diego State (9-4, 6-2) on Saturday.
“We got beat on the glass and on loose balls this evening,” said SFSU coach Bill Treseler. “Monterey is a talented team and they competed at a very high level tonigh. This conference is a mine field and you cannot lose your edge ever.”
The first 10 minutes of the game went back and forth until the Gators went on a 9-3 run to take a 26-20 lead. The Otters answered, outscoring the Gators 11-5 in the next five minutes to tie the game at 31-31 on a Cannon lay-up. The Otters finished the half outscoring SF State 8-4 to take a 39-35 lead headed in
the locker room.
CSU Monterey Bay started the second half outscoring the Gators 19-12 to take a 58-47 lead in the first six minutes of the half. The Otters later went on the 13-2 run capped by back to back Sanchez lay-ups to increase their lead to 77-60 with just 2:59 on the clock.
#Steve Monreal#, a 5' 11” guard who transferred from East L.A. College made his debut for the Otters and scored 11 points.
