SAN FRANCISCO --- San Francisco State dominated the glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, en route to a narrow 78-72 victory over the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay women Wednesday night. The Gators had 35 total rebounds to 20 for the Otters, who still came within a shot of tying the game with under a minute left.
San Francisco State led 35-30 at halftime and quickly built their lead to double digits when #Dana Andrews#, who scored 22 on the night, left the game with a sprained ankle. They trailed 57-43 before #Brittany Kikuchi# nailed a three off the glass to cut it to 11 and then hit a layup to reduce it to 57-48 with 9:58 left.
After the Gators came back with a bucket of their own, Kikuchi would hit another three to make it an 8-point deficit and Andrews re-entered the game. Kikuchi would finish with 17 off the bench.
The Otters slowly climbed back in it and found themselves down 72-69 with 53.6 seconds left and the ball, but point guard #Alma Lopez# (12 points, 9 assists on the night) threw an errant pass, turning the ball over. That forced the Otters to immediately foul Brio Rode who hit both free throws for the Gators. Rode led SFSU with 20 points.
The Otters get one more chance. They scored a quick bucket and fouled again. This time Jessica Hout-Freeman missed the front end of a one-and-one and Andrews grabbed the rebound. The Otters quickly went up the court, #Sabrina Jenkins# tried to fire a three, but Hout-Freeman redeemed herself with a block.
Another foul by the Otters put Desiree Butler at the line and she knocked down both free throws to put her team back up 76-71 with 15 seconds left, to little time for the Otters.
“We've been in every single game but when it comes down to crunch time we make critical errors,” said coach Amber Magner.
