SEASIDE --- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team fell to 1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a 71-63 loss to Sonoma State Friday night at the Otter Sports Center.
#Dana Andrews# and #Britnea Moore# scored 17 points each to lead the Otters. #Krista Herr# added 10 rebounds to her nine points, but Sonoma State had 29 rebounds as a team to the Otters' 21. Genny Anderson lead the Seawolves with 20 points on 8-11 shooting. Lauren Redfield scored 11 by hitting 3 of 4 from the three-point line and adding two more from the charity stripe. Redfield also led Sonoma State on the boards with seven.
The Otters trailed 39-30 at the half. A basket in the lane by Moore, who hit 7-10 for the night, cut the deficit to 41-47 with 13.47 to go, but the Otters would never get any closer. The Seawolves were able to control the boards, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds on the night. CSUMB had just six offensive boards.
“We dug ourselves a hole,” said CSUMB head coach Amber Magner. “We lost focus. Sonoma State is a very good team, but one of these days we're going to figure out how to play as a team and focus for 40 minutes.”
Magner pointed to the lack of assists by the Otters as evidence of a lack of team play. Point guard #Alma Lopez# had six assists and Andrews had three. #Sabrina Jenkins# also had one, but nobody else.
The Otters face Humboldt State University at home tonight. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's at 7:30 p.m.
