Carmel Valley native Skip Powers has returned to Monterey County to join the Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics Department. Powers brings over 20 years of experience to the CSUMB Athletics Communications team and comes to the Otters from his previous role at UC Davis.

Powers has worked all over the country, including stints with prominent programs in the Southeastern Conference and the National Football League.

His stops have included roles at the University of Alabama, UCLA, Florida, the Los Angeles Chargers and UC Davis.

At Alabama, Powers was a part of a media relations team that handled the day-to-day PR duties for the Crimson Tide football team. During his tenure, the Tide claimed three national championships, a Heisman Trophy and numerous national and All-American accolades. Powers also spearheaded the communications for the national champion softball team.

At UCLA, he promoted campaigns for Butkus Award winner Eric Kendricks and Lott Trophy honoree Anthony Barr. Powers also helped orchestrate the Bruins football program to multiple Sports Illustrated covers and features.

Powers then worked for the Chargers for three seasons that included multiple international games, a playoff appearance and numerous award winners. He was tasked as the liaison for the national broadcast teams and handled the day-to-day media relations for the players, coaches, and put together the press materials.

At Florida, Powers was in charge of all the communications for the nationally-ranked football team that included a Heisman Trophy finalist campaign and multiple All-Americans. 

Powers, a three-sport athlete at Carmel High School, went on to earn a communications degree from Saint Mary’s College.
