Jody Garry

Jody Garry set the bar for her Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team higher than it’s ever been after leading the Otters to their best–ever season in 2013. Under her tutalege, the Otters set program highs for wins (18), CCAA wins (12) and CCAA finish (5th). Of course, 2013’s success was merely a continuation of what she’s built in The Kelp Bed.

The CSUMB volleyball program truly began a new era when Garry took the reins at the start of the 2007 season. The Otters have enjoyed their greatest success over her seven seasons, averaging nearly 12 1/2 wins per season.

Her 87 career wins on the Otter bench are a CSUMB volleyball record as are her five seasons of double–digit victories (2007, ’09, ’10, ’12, ’13). Her student–athletes have earned the first four first team All–CCAA awards in program history over the last three seasons, including Rheann Fall (2010, ’11) and Julia Ashen in (2012, ’14).

Ashen follwed up her 2013 All–CCAA nod by becoming just the second first team Capital One Academic All–American in school history®.Fall earned the first volleyball All–American honor in school history in 2010, the same season she was named the AVCA national player of the week, becoming the first Otter in any sport to be so honored.

Prior to CSUMB, Garry served as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Washington State for three years (2004-2006) where she solidified her reputation as a top–flight teacher and recruiter. She moved to WSU from Idaho State University, where she spent the 2003 season as the Bengals’ top assistant and recruiting coordinator. ISU finished the season with a 20–9 record, its best season in more than a decade.

In 2002, Garry was the top assistant at the University of South Dakota where she helped lead the Coyotes to a 16-win season, their most wins in 20 years.

Garry got her first taste of head coaching experience at Adams State in 2001, leading the Grizzlies to a 9–17 mark and a fifth place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division.

She began her coaching career as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Saint Mary's College from 1997-1999. From there she moved on to Golden West College, where she helped then Head Coach Albert Gasparian to the program's eighth consecutive state championship.

In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Garry has extensive club coaching experience and is actively involved with clubs and clinics in the Monterey Bay area.

A native of Chatsworth, Calif., Garry (nee Paperno) enjoyed an accomplished playing career as well.  She was a four–year letterwinner (1992–95), two-time captain and All–North Central Conference performer at the University of North Dakota. She spent the summer of 1997 touring professionally in Italy and played in the California Beach Volleyball Association, making her way into the top 20 rankings while earning an AAA rating.

Garry received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from North Dakota in 1997 and a master's in education from Saint Mary’s. Garry and her husband Kirby, the CSUMB assistant athletic director for external operations, reside in Marina with their four children.
