Nicole Deatherage

Nicole Deatherage, a former standout at Sacramento State, begins her fourth season on the CSUMB coaching staff as the pitching coach.

Recently named to the Hornets All-Decade team, Deatherage came to CSUMB in the spring of 2008, and has since helped the program’s pitchers to notable success in the circle. In addition to being the primary pitching coach, Deatherage’s duties include working with the catchers. Off the field she is responsible for recruiting, travel, strength and conditioning as well as camps and clinics.

Last season, Deatherage was a part of the staff that led the team to its winningest season in school history (33-20). She helped junior pitcher Diane Ortiz garner her first CCAA Co-Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.  Under Deatherage’s guidance, the pitching team finished the conference season with the lowest hits allowed (183), runs allowed (94), home runs allowed (6) and earned runs allowed (67).

In 2009 the team continued to build on their success, bringing home the department’s first CCAA Championship Banner by winning the conference tournament.

During her time at Sacramento State, Deatherage appeared in 112 games with 93 starts, 72 complete games, 18 shutouts and 427 strikeouts in 676.1 innings pitched. She had 43 wins and a 1.89 ERA, that included a senior season in which she posted a 0.96 ERA in 28 appearances. She was an All-Region second team and All-PCSC selection in 2004 after going 13-12 with a 0.96 ERA and seven shutouts. Deatherage was also an Academic All-District choice that year. She ranks among Sacramento State’s top four players in six different Hornet Div. I career categories, including third in innings, starts, complete games and strikeouts, and fourth in wins and shutouts. She also threw four no-hitters in her four-year career. Deatherage was named the 2004 Hornet Athlete of the Year.

After her stint with the Hornets, Deatherage was drafted in the sixth round by the Sacramento Sunbirds in the 2004 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft. Deatherage played professional softball in Italy for two years, leading her team to a 2006 Championship.

Deatherage will graduate this December with a Master of Art in Counselor Education from San Jose State.

Deatherage lives in Marina.
