Biography

2013 – Cal State Monterey Bay: Ben Garland continued to set himself apart as the top runner in CSUMB history with a stellar junior season…was CSUMB’s top runner in all seven meets, posting the best finishes in Otter history at both the CCAA (16th) and NCAA West Regional (27th) championship meets…owns CSUMB’s all–time top marks in the 4–mile (20:00.90), 8K (24:59.10) and 10K (32:45.99)…picked up CSUMB’s first meet win at the NCAA level with a first place finish at the Sonoma State Invitational (Sept. 21)…also recorded Top 3 finishes at the Hornet Jamboree (Sept. 14) and Crystal Springs Invitational (Sept. 7) where he finished second and third respectively…missed becoming CSUMB’s first All–CCAA performer by just 2.1 seconds.

2012 – Cal State Monterey Bay: Garland proved to be CSUMB’s top harrier in his first season of NCAA competition, leading the Otters in all six meets…made his biggest strides over UC San Diego’s 8K course, running a regular season time of 27:22.2 (Oct. 6) before turning in a 26:32.3 to place 19th at the CCAA Championship meet two weeks later (Oct. 20)…recorded a 20:32.6 at the Hornet Jamboree on the Granite Regional Park course for his only 6K time of 2012.

Santa Barbara CC: Garland finished 20th in the California JuCo State Championship meet as a sophomore at Santa Barbara City College, running a 20:48 6K at Woodward Park to place second among all Western State Conference qualifiers…was SBCC’s team captain…earned honorable mention All–WSC honors.

High School: Garland attended Harbor High School in Santa Cruz.

Personal: Garland is majoring in human communications at CSUMB…plans pursue his master’s degree with an eye towards becoming a physician’s assistant…son of Glenn and Ruth Garland…has an older brother, Jasper.
