SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay battled Cal State LA through a scoreless opening half, but a pair of second-half goals lifted the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 victory Sunday morning at Cardinale Stadium. The result moves CSUMB to 2-2-2 overall and 0-2-0 in CCAA play.
Neither side generated much separation during a defensive opening 45 minutes. The Otters and Golden Eagles each managed two shots in the first half, with CSUMB producing the only shot on goal. Monterey Bay also earned the lone corner kick of the period as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Cal State LA broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Celine Gehrig scored off an assist from Jasmine Aguilar at the 47:17 mark to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
CSUMB looked for a response and put two more attempts on frame during the second half, but Cal State LA goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin kept the Otters off the board.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the 64th minute when Itzel Carbajal scored to make it 2-0. The goal proved to be the final scoring of the afternoon.
Naomi Tobias, Juliana Dow and Kamryn Bubak each put a shot on goal for Monterey Bay. Ashleigh Carroll accounted for the Otters' other attempt as CSUMB finished with four shots, three of which were on target.
Cal State LA finished with seven shots and scored on both of its attempts on goal. The Golden Eagles also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, with all four of their corners coming after halftime.
The Otters continue CCAA play on the road next week when they head to Cal State San Marcos on Friday, Sept. 25.
