TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay opened CCAA play by picking up a point on the road Friday night, battling Stanislaus State to a 1-1 draw at Warrior Stadium.
Philip Wolny provided the offense for the Otters, scoring less than five minutes into the match, while the CSUMB defense held the Warriors without a shot on goal over the final 64 minutes. The draw moves Monterey Bay to 4-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in CCAA play.
CSUMB wasted little time getting on the board. Just 4:35 into the match,
Cam Fisk helped create the opening goal, finding Wolny for his third goal of the season and an early 1-0 Otter advantage.
The lead held for the next 21 minutes before Stanislaus State responded. Adrian Yepez scored off a Michael Daley assist in the 26th minute to level the match at 1-1.
From there, neither side could find another breakthrough.
The Otters nearly regained the lead late in the opening half.
Mason Ward put an attempt on frame in the 35th minute before Wolny forced Stanislaus State goalkeeper Dylan Isasi into another save in the 42nd.
Stanislaus State generated six second-half shots, but none found the target as the CSUMB back line kept
Griffin Welch from having to make a save.
Damon Smith and
Jacob Burnison each played the full 90 minutes in defense, while Fisk also went the distance after providing the assist on Monterey Bay's goal.
CSUMB continued searching for the winner late.
Fernando Caballero put an attempt on goal in the 85th minute, but Isasi made the save to preserve the draw.
The Otters finished with nine shots, placing three on goal, while Stanislaus State recorded 12 attempts but managed just one on frame. The Warriors held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Wolny led CSUMB with two shots and his third goal of the season, while Ward and
Sylas Sells each added two attempts.
CSUMB continues conference play Sunday afternoon when the Otters welcome No. 1 Cal State LA to Cardinale Stadium.
