SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's cross country team delivered a complete team performance Saturday morning, capturing the Masters University Collegiate Invitational championship at Central Park.
The Otters finished with 69 points, edging runner-up Vanguard by two points to claim the team title in the 6K race. CSUMB placed all five scoring runners among the top 20 overall and six runners inside the top 21, finishing ahead of a 21-team scoring field that included Pepperdine, The Master's, Embry-Riddle Arizona, Westmont and Pomona-Pitzer.
"I am so happy with the individual and team performances today," CSUMB head coach
Greg Rhines said. "The weather was very uncooperative, and the course wasn't the fastest, yet the student-athletes gritted it out. I cannot wait for the next meet."
Rachel Hoops once again led the Otters, crossing the line ninth overall in 22:09.5 and contributing eight team points. Freshman
Dakota Keyworth followed just 2.5 seconds later, placing 11th overall in 22:12.0 and scoring 10 points.
The Otters' depth proved decisive from there.
Deia Kerseg finished 16th in 22:34.2, while
Angeline Gutierrez crossed 18th in 22:41.2. Senior
Cozette Wood completed CSUMB's scoring five with a 20th-place finish in 22:42.9.
CSUMB's top five were separated by just 33.4 seconds, giving the Otters the tightly packed scoring group needed to secure the championship. The five combined for a team time of 1:52:19.5 and an average of approximately 22:28 over the 6K course.
Daniela Munguia added to the Otters' impressive depth, finishing immediately behind Wood in 21st place at 22:43.5, putting six CSUMB runners across the line within a span of just 34 seconds.
