Everything Clicks As Otters Sweep Warriors

Otters ride solid pitching, defense and five homers to sweep

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made all three phases work to earn a huge doubleheader sweep of Stanislaus State Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB took the opener, 5–2, behind the first win and first complete game from freshman pitcher Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS). Fellow freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) threw her second 5-hitter in as many days as the Otters took the nightcap, 12–2.

The offense thrived off the long ball for the second consecutive day, hitting two homers in the opener and three in the nightcap. Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) did the honors in Game 1. Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College), Oli Perez (Ceres HS) and Alcayaga all went deep in Game 2.

Emma Mendoza (Fountain Valley/Edison HS) staked the Otters to a 1–0 lead in the first inning of the opener with a 2-out, RBI double. Alcayaga and Anastacia Alba both went yard in the 4-run fourth that gave CSUMB a 5–0 lead.

That's all the support Griego would need as she allowed just seven hits, including four infield singles, to earn her first win as an Otter. She allowed one run on an infield hit and one on a throwing error, but was otherwise in control.

Stanislaus scored on a first inning wild pitch to take a quick lead in the nightcap. The lead lasted only two batters, however, as Abreanna Alba hit her second homer in as many days to tie it in the Otter first. Perez followed with a 2-run double to give CSUMB a lead that never would be threatened.

Perez and Alcayaga homered to lead off the third inning and drive Stanislaus starter Victoria Alarcon from the circle. A 2-run single from Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) finally capped the 8-run outburst that left the Otters with a 12–1 lead.

Perhaps rusty from the 37 minute Otter third, Nulick allowed a leadoff home run to Sasha Martello in the fourth before retiring the final five Warrior batters to seal the win.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Mikaya Griego coaxed Allejandra Perea to ground into a fielder's choice with the potential tying run on in the seventh.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Oli Perez and Ally Alcayaga went deep back-to-back leading off the third to drive Stanislaus starter Victoria Alarcon from the game.

AN EXTENDED SHUTOUT… Although not technically a shutout, Mikaya Griego extended her scoreless innings streak to nine innings by shutting out the Warriors for 4 1/3 innings Saturday.

BACK-TO-BACK BACK-TO-BACK JACKS… After Abreanna Alba and Nevaeh Martinez hit back-to-back home runs in Game 1 yesterday, the Otters made it two days in a row with back-to-back long balls when Oli Perez and Ally Alcayaga did it leading off the third inning of Game 2 Saturday.

CRAZY EIGHTS: The Otters scored a season-high eight runs in the third inning of Game 2 Saturday versus Stanislaus State. They're the most scored in an inning by CSUMB since they put 12 on Cal Poly Humboldt in the first inning of a 15–9 Otter win on Feb. 15, 2020. The eight runs in an inning are tied for eighth all-time in the CSUMB record book.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Emma Mendoza (2), Kieley Ganaden (3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Anastacia Alba (4), Ally Alcayaga (7).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Emma Mendoza (3), Oli Perez (7). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Abreanna Alba(2), Oli Perez (5), Ally Alcayaga (8).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head up U.S. 101 for a big 4-game series at Sonoma State Apr. 18 and 19.
