Otters Power Past Sharks, 10–5

Perez (2), Martinez and Mendoza homer in win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Led by a pair of lasers from Oli Perez (Ceres HS), Cal State Monterey Bay hit a season-high four home runs to power its way to a 10–5 victory over Hawaii Pacific University in a nonconference game Wednesday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters added a fifth homer as they jumped to a 7–4 lead to open Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader, before rain washed it away in the third inning.

Perez, who hit her second and third homers of the season, led a 10-hit attack that included homers from freshman Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) and junior Emma Mendoza (Fountain Valley/Edison HS), each of whom hit their first. Martinez added a triple and single. Junior Malia Martin (Lynwood/El Camino College) chipped in her first 3-hit game as an Otter.

CSUMB appeared ready to run away with the game when Martinez led off the third inning with a moon shot and Perez followed three batters later with a 3-run blast as part of a 5-run frame. But the Sharks scraped together three runs in the fourth to get back into the game.

HPU scored twice in the fifth to get within 7–5. But Shark hopes proved short-lived as Martin singled in a run before a 2-run shot by Perez put the game out of reach in the home half of the sixth.

Sophomore Karissa Gralnick (Newbury Park HS) allowed just two unearned runs in 3 2/3 inning of 2-hit relief to earn her first collegiate victory.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Oli Perez hit her second 2-run homer of the day to extend CSUMB's lead to 10–5 in the sixth inning.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART I… The Otters scored double-figure runs for the second time this season and the second time in the last four games during the 10–5 win over Hawaii Pacific Wednesday afternoon.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART II… Oli Perez hit two home runs in a game for the second time in her career during Wednesday's 10–5 win over Hawaii Pacific. She joins Ally Alcayaga, Julia Garcia, Shae Olds and Samantha Luna as the only Otters to do it twice in their CSUMB careers. Olds (4 times) and Garcia (3 times) are the only players to do it more than twice.

DOUBLE THE FUN PART III… The Otters also had double the fun with their gloves Wednesday versus Hawaii Pacific, tying the school record by turning three double plays. It was the eighth time they've accomplished that feat and almost nine years to the day since the time since they did it in a 5–1 win at Cal State San Marcos on Mar. 11, 2016.

FOR WHOM THE BOMBS TOLLS… CSUMB's four home runs in Wednesday's 10–5 win over Hawaii Pacific tied for the second most in a game in program history. The Otter record is six homers in a win at Cal Poly Humboldt on Mar. 21, 2009.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Karisa Hawkins (1). TRIPLES: Nevaeh Martinez (1). HOME RUNS: Nevaeh Martinez (1), Emma Mendoza (1), Oli Perez 2, (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome No. 21 San Francisco State to town for a 4-game series Mar. 14–15. The action kicks off with a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
