SEASIDE, Calif. – A pair of freshmen proved to be the pivotal difference in helping lead the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UC Merced Friday evening at Cardinale Stadium.
Newcomer Jacob Aiona earned his first career shutout in goal as the Otter defense held the Bobcats to 10 total shots while Aiona was credited with two saves.
Freshman defender Noah Robinson scored his first career goal in an Otter uniform, finding the back of the net in the 60th minute.
On a CSUMB corner kick, Robinson crashed the box and finished the well-served bender from sophomore Ramiro Corrales, Jr. The midfielder leads the team with 14 points on four goals and six assists. His six helpers rank tied for second in the CCAA.
The Otters fired off 20 shots and put eight on frame as Corrales, Jr., led the squad with six and put three on goal.
CSUMB will close out its regular season home slate on Sunday, Oct. 26, when it welcomes No. 1-ranked Stanislaus State. The match will mark Senior Day for the Otters and kick off at 11:30 am.
