ARCATA, Calif. –
Hugo Vargas-Rios scored for the third time this weekend with a pair of goals to help lead the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a convincing 3-1 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt on Sunday at College Creek Field.
The Otters (7-3-4, 4-2-2 CCAA) are heating up at the right time as they are undefeated in their last three matches, winning both contests on their final regular season road trip of the season.
"What a good performance and what a great result on the road against a well coached Humboldt side," head coach Graeme Jaap said. "We always know how tough the road trip is up North but the guys put in another top performance. We were a little disappointed to concede against the run of play in the first half but we were punished for switching off. We responded very quickly with a great header by Hugo and then he had another good finish after that. We knew Humboldt would come out flying in the second half so we were very happy for that third goal after some great work from Mason. The guys are looking forward to being back at home next week with another tough weekend against CSUDH and nationally ranked LA."
Vargas-Rios answered a Lumberjack goal just one-minute later in the 21
st as he buried an Eric Vasquez-Acosta pass. Just eight minutes later he gave the Otters the lead for good when he finished a
Mason Ward assist.
Ward was on the scoring side to add the insurance goal in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 59
th minute. Ward continues to lead CSUMB with six goals and Vargas-Rios closely follows with five tallies.
The Otters peppered the Lumberjacks with 21 shots, putting 11 on frame. Vargas-Rios led all players with six shots.
Jack Blickenstaff continued to be stellar in goal, making four saves.
CSUMB returns home for the last three regular season matches of the year. The Otters will host Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A., next weekend at Cardinale Stadium.
