Big Rally Comes Up Short For Otter Men

CSUMB trims 20-point deficit to two before Sonoma hangs on, 82-73

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team nearly rallied back from a 20–point deficit before visiting Sonoma State held on for an 82–73 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) led four Otters in double figures with a game–high 19 points. Javon Johnson (De La Salle HS) added 15 points while Charles Johnston scored 14 with seven rebounds. Joe Wall (Portland/Jesuit HS) reached double figures for the fourth time this season with 10.

CSUMB raced to a quick 9–2 lead before Sonoma State used an aggressive zone to out-score the Otters 30–12 over the final 16 minutes of the first half and take a 39–21 lead into the break. CSUMB, which opened the game just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc, made five of its next six, trimming a 20–point deficit to two at 56–54 with just under nine minutes remaining.

The Otters had a chance to take the lead on their next possession but missed a trey. A flagrant foul call on Jordan Archie (Bishop Montgomery HS) that had the crowd scratching its collective head sparked a 9–0 run by the Seawolves that gave control back to Sonoma.

CSUMB pulled back to within four on a Tengan 3–point play with 54 seconds remaining, 75–71. Sonoma made 5-of-6 from the line down the stretch to key the Otters at bay.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Julian Bryant made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds remaining to extend Sonoma's lead to 79–71.

JOHNSTON CRACKS REBOUNDING TOP 25… Although his collegiate career is less than 1 1/2 seasons old, sophomore Charles Johnston already has moved into the Top 25 on the CSUMB career rebounding list. His seven boards Thursday against Sonoma State bring his total to 249. He passed Jorey Scott (2014–15) for No. 25 and needs 10 more boards to climb all the way to No. 20. Joe Mitchell (2006–09) owns the Otter record with 781 rebounds.

WALL CLOSING IN ON 500 POINTS… With 10 points Thursday versus Sonoma State, Joe Wall brought his collegiate career total to 482 points (including 58 points scored while playing at NCAA Division I member Seattle University).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 19; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 7; ASSISTS: Javon Johnson/Jailen Nelson/Jaden Tengan 4; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson 1; STEALS: Joe Wall 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–game homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
