Nelson’s 20, Johnston’s Double-Double Not Enough

Nelson posts 5th 20-point game, Johnston goes for 14 & 13 as Otters fall at SFSU, 68-60

SAN FRANCISCO — Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) went for 20 points and Charles Johnston posted his ninth double–double of the season, but it wasn't enough to stop San Francisco State from earning a split of the season series with Cal State Monterey Bay by taking a 68–60 decision Saturday in The Swamp.

Nelson's 20–point game was his second in a row and fifth of the season. Johnston, meanwhile finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

CSUMB got off to fast starts in both halves. The Otters raced to a 9–0 to open the game and used a 7–0 run to open the second half and erase a 41–36 deficit. But long stretches of cold CSUMB shooting allowed the Gators to weather both storms.

After the Otters took a 43–41 lead, SFSU used an 10–0 run to go back up by eight. The lead hovered between five and 10 points for the balance of the contest, although CSUMB had several opportunities to pull closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Donovan Cooks made a pair of free throws to increase the SFSU lead to 67–58 with 38 seconds remaining.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… Charles Johnston entered the week ranked No. 9 in the NCAA with eight double–doubles. He now has nine double–doubles, tying Dexter Amey (2000–01) for No. 3 on the Otter single–season list. Joe Mitchell set the CSUMB record with 10 double–doubles in 2007–08 and 2008–09.

20 TIMES 5… Jailen Nelson's 20–point effort Saturday was his fifth of the season and the eighth of his career.

NELSON VAULTS TO 15TH IN CAREER SCORING… With 20 points Saturday at San Francisco State, Jailen Nelson moved all the way from No. 18 to No. 15 on the Otter career scoring list with 733 career points. He needs four more to pass Rocky Steryo (2001–02) for 14th place.

JOHNSTON UP TO No. 12 IN REBOUNDING… Charles Johnston also made a big jump up the single–season rebounding chart, moving from No. 20 to a tie for No. 12 with his 13 rebounds Saturday bringing his season total to 179. He needs five more to break into the Top 10. His 179 boards are the most by an Otter since Julian Ducree pulled down 195 in the 2016–17 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 20; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 13; ASSISTS: Ameere Britton/Jailen Nelson/Jaden Tengan 3; BLOCKS: Jordan Archie/Joey Bilello/Charles Johnston 1; STEALS: Ameere Britton/Joe Wall 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to host Cal State Dominguez Hills as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
