Two Gems, One Win On Day 2 of TOC

Otters fall to NNU 1-0; beat HPU 2-1

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a pair of marvelous pitching performances and managed a split from them on Day 2 of the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock. The Otters fell to Northwest Nazarene 1–0 and beat Hawaii Pacific 2–1 at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Stanislaus State.

Sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) took an incredibly hard luck loss in the opener versus NNU. She tossed a 3–hitter and struck out a career–high 11 batters.

Stetler gave up a single and a double with one out in the first inning, then threw 6 2/3 innings of 1–hit, shutout ball. It wasn't enough, however, as the Otter offense managed only an infield single by Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS).

Cassie Gasper (Merced College (Univ. of Missouri) matched Stetler's brilliance in Game 2 against HPU. She limited the Sharks to three hits over eight innings, striking out six.

Freshman Kiely Ganaden (North Salinas HS) staked the Otters to a 1–0 lead with a sharp single in the second inning. HPU used a walk and a pair of singles — the last two hits it would manage in the game — to tie the score at 1–1 in the fourth.

That's the way it stayed until the eighth, when Gasper pitched around the tie-breaker runner at second in the top of the inning. In the home half, Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) laid down the expected sacrifice bunt attempt to starting the inning. The bunt was too perfect, however, and Perez was able to motor all the way to second while moving Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) to third.

Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) followed with a grounder back to the circle. HPU pitcher Taylor Thompson looked Honorio back to third and threw Clay out at first, but Honorio out-ran the play and was still able to score standing up to walk it off for CSUMB.

THE NNU GAME WAS OVER WHEN… NNU reliever Sidney Booth coaxed a pop fly from Oli Perez with the potential go ahead runs on base to end the sixth inning and the final Otter scoring chance.

THE HPU GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Ashley Honorio scored standing up from third on a ground ball to walk it off in the eighth.

NOT 0K BUT 11K… Kassidy Stetler fanned a career–high 11 batters Friday against Northwest Nazarene. That mark is tied for No. 6 in the Otter career record book for strikeouts in a single game.

CASSIE WITH A K… Cassie Gasper climbed over the 100 strikeout mark for the season with six Ks in Friday's win over Hawaii Pacific. She now has 102 strikeouts in 2023, good for No. 14 on the Otters single-season list. She needs two more to pass Cori Reinhardt's 2012 season for No. 13 and five to pass Angela Carbral's 2008 total for No. 12.

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. NNU… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. HPU… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (8). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude play at the Tournament of Champions Saturday when they meet Simon Fraser University at 11:30 a.m. and Holy Names University at 4:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Pedretti Park in Turlock.
