SEASIDE, CALIF. – The Otters attempted to claw their way out of an early deficit, but came up just short, falling to the Dominguez Hills Toros 78-66 on Saturday afternoon at the Kelp Bed.

The Otters and Toros traded blows for much of the first half, however, the Toros seized momentum, closing out the final 9:22 of the opening frame on a 26-7 run. Monterey Bay threw everything they had at the Toros in the second half, but the 16 point first half deficit was too much to overcome for the Otters.

Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) led all scorers with 17 points, all of which came in the second half. Joining Nelson in double-figures were Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Aus./Notre Dame College) with 13, and Joe Wall (Portland/Seattle Univ.) with 11.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Dominguez Hills knocked down a free throw with 2:04 left to extend their lead to 71-56.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES… The Otters scored 42 of their 68 points in the second half, improving their field goal percentage by nearly 10.5% from halftime to the final buzzer. This mirrored the Otters play all season long, as they averaged 33.8 points in first halves this season and 38.8 point in second halves.

BRINGING DOWN THE BOARDS… The Otters outrebounded the Toros 42-38, including 13 offensive rebounds today. The trio of Jared Williams, JR Schilling and Charles Johnston combined for 25 total rebounds and nine offensive rebounds to lead this effort for the Otters. This was the Otters eighth 40+ rebounds game this season, including three of their last four.

SENIOR SALUTE… This game was the final game of the season for the Otters and the final collegiate games for seniors Levi Frankland, Jared Williams and JR Schilling all of whom will graduate this spring.
