Men’s Basketball Notebook: Playoffs Start Early For Otters

Otters head to Stanislaus, Chico for playoff-like games

SEASIDE, Calif. — Although the CCAA Championship Tournament is still three weeks away, Cal State Monterey Bay hits the road for the final time this regular season for what amount to a pair of playoff games this weekend. The fun starts Thursday when the Otters look to complete a season sweep of Stanislaus State. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.

CSUMB and Stanislaus are amongst a octet of teams jockeying for the last three CCAA Tournament berths. The Otters could still finish as high as third in the CCAA while fourth place is still on the table for Stanislaus as we enter the final fortnight of conference play.

When these teams met in January, the Otters got big first halves from Joe Wall and Levi Frankland and clutch shooting from Jailen Nelson late to hold off Stanislaus State for an 80–74 victory in The Kelp Bed. Wall scored 21 of his team–leading 24 points and Frankland scored 16 of his 20 in the first half as the Otters scored a season–high 48 points in the period. They built their lead to as many as 19 points before a furious Stanislaus rally turned a 57–38 CSUMB lead into a 74–67 Warrior advantage with 4:01 remaining. Marlon Short led all scorers with 28 points for Stanislaus.
