Free Throws Prove Costly In Loss

Johnston’s double-double can't overcome FT disparity in 72-65 loss

CARSON, Calif. — Sophomore Charles Johnston posted his third double–double of the season, but it wasn't enough to help Cal State Monterey Bay overcome a 19–1 disparity in free throws in a 72–65 loss at Cal state Dominguez Hills Saturday evening in The Torodome.

Johnston went for 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Otters, who led by as many as 12 points in the first half and eight in the second half before Dominguez Hills made a late run to steal the victory.

The Otters attempted just one free throw in the game, that when Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) completed a 3-point play with 1:50 remaining in the first half. The Toros, meanwhile, went 16-for-19 from the stripe, including 11-for-12 in the second half, to power their come-from-behind effort.

Despite the dearth of free-throw opportunities, the Otters held a 65–62 lead with 4:09 remaining when their offense went silent. They went 0-for-5 from the floor over the final 3:22 as Dominguez Hills scored the final 10 points.

In addition to Johnston, Tengan scored 12 points and Jordan Archie (Gardena/Bishop Montgomery HS) added 11 off of the bench.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when the Otters turned the ball over with 20 seconds remaining and Dominguez Hills leading 72–65.

WALL MOVES UP 3-POINT LIST… Senior forward Joe Wall made a pair of treys Saturday at Dominguez Hills to tie Koen Sapwell for No. 7 on the Otter career 3-pointers list with 109. Next up is CSUMB hall of famer Matt Dalhamer at No. 6 with 116. Evan Zeller holds the Otter record with 159.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston 15. REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 10. ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 5. BLOCKS: Joe Wall 2. STEALS: Ameere Britton/Javon Johnson/Charles Johnston 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take off for winter break, returning to action New Year's Eve when they host Stanislaus State for a matinee. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
