Magical Season Ends In NCAA Second Round

Otter run closes with 4-1 loss at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — The magical run of the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team came to an end Saturday night as Cal Poly Pomona scored four times in the first half en route to a 4–1 victory at Kellogg Stadium.

As they did in the first two meetings this season, the Broncos put the Otters behind the eight ball early Saturday night, scoring before the match was six minutes old. Pomona added three more scores before the match reached the half hour mark.

CSUMB created a spark just after the half hour when Hugo Vargas-Rios (Pajaro Valley HS/Cabrillo College) buried a penalty kick to pull one goal back. But the Pomona defense held its composure and did not allow the Otters to put another ball on frame in the match.

CSUMB's season ends with a program-best record of 12–5–4. Cal Poly Pomona (14–1–5) advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament where it will face Cal State L.A. in a rematch of the CCAA Tournament championship match won by the Golden Eagles in penalty kicks.
