Johnston Makes History As Otters Tame Wolves

Charles Johnston goes for 20 points, 21 boards in 99-92 OT win

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Sophomore center Charles Johnston pulled down a school–record 21 rebounds and scored 20 points to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team to a 99–92 overtime win versus Western Oregon in at the CCAA/GNAC Crossover Tournament in Coussoulis Arena Saturday afternoon.

Johnston's outburst was just the second 20–20 game in school history. He did equal damage in early and late. He went for 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first half then basically repeated that performance after the break, adding one more rebound.

Junior guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) scored 20 points, his second consecutive 20-point game, in support of CSUMB's highest scoring output since 2020.

CSUMB built a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but still need a late Johnston layup to forge a 40–40 tie at intermission. The Otters led for most of the second half until Western pulled ahead, 71–70 with 3:38 remaining.

The Otters faced their biggest deficit of the game, down four at 79–75 with 33 seconds to play and still trailed by three with six ticks left when Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) drained a 3–pointer to send the game to overtime tied at 82–82. Johnston opened overtime with a pair for free throws and Wall added a 3–pointer to give CSUMB a quick 87–82 lead and the Otters never trailed again.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Jailen Nelson's free throw with 29 seconds remaining extended the Otter lead to 97–89.

THE 20–20 CLUB… Charles Johnston joined an ultra exclusive club with his 20-point, 21-rebound effort in Saturday's 99–92 win over Western Oregon. He joins Richard Jenkins as the only Otters ever to accomplish that feat. Jenkins did it as part of a 57-point, 20-rebound night in a 126–122, 4 OT win over — wait for it — Western Oregon on Dec. 15, 2006.

THE 20–REBOUND CLUB… Charles Johnston joined an almost as exclusive club by becoming just the third player in Otter history to pull down 20+ rebounds in a game. The others were Jenkins (in the aforementioned WOU game of 2006) and Jared Jungworth, who had 15 points and 20 boards in a win over Pacific Union College on Jan. 28, 2003.

NELSON'S PRIVATE 20–20 CLUB… Jailen Nelson joined his own 20–20 club when he scored 20 points for the second consecutive game in Saturday's 99–92 win over Western Oregon. Nelson, who had 26 points in Friday's season–opener against Central Washington, has reached 20+ points for the fourth and fifth time in his collegiate career to open the season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston/Jailen Nelson 20; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 21; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 8; BLOCKS: Charles Johnston 2; STEALS: Four Otters 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their season opening 4–game roadtrip by heading to Hayward for the Pioneer Conference Challenge Nov. 17–18 at Cal State East Bay. CSUMB opens tournament play Friday (Nov. 17) against Saint Martin's University.
