Otters Rally To Run Win Streak To Four

CSUMB finishes on 18-7 run to upend Sonoma State, 61-58

ROHERNT PARK, Calif. — Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) posted his third consecutive 20–point game as Cal State Monterey Bay rallied late to earn a 61–58 win over Sonoma State Thursday night in The Wolves Den.

Frankland finished with 21 points and sophomore Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 16 with team highs of six rebounds and four assists to help CSUMB improve to 7–10 overall and 5–7 in CCAA play. The Otters pulled to within one-half game of a CCAA Tournament bid and 1 1/2 games of fourth place Sonoma (8–11, 7–6) with nine games remaining.

The game was close throughout. Sonoma made one push to take control, going up eight at 51–43 midway through the second half. That's where the Otter defense put the clamps down, holding the Seawolves to seven points over the final 9:32 of regulation.

The Otters caught Sonoma at 53–53 thanks to an Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) 3–pointer with six minutes left. They took the lead for good two minutes later when Britton found Damjan Agovic (Del Campo HS) with a clever little pass that led to a reverse layup and a 55–54 lead.

Nelson and Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) came up clutch in the final seconds, with each making a pair of 1-and-1 free throws in the final 18 seconds to secure the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Austin Fadel's pull-up jumper failed to find its mark at the final horn.

FOUR IN A ROW… Thursday's 61–58 win at Sonoma State ran CSUMB's win streak to a season–best four games. The last time the Otters won four consecutive games came last season, from Jan. 29–Feb. 12, 2022.

A HIGH FIVE ON THE HORIZON? With a win at Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday, the Otters would run their winning streak to five in a row for the first time since they won seven consecutive games from Nov. 18–Dec. 12, 2008.

20–20–20 VISION… With 21 points in Thursday's win at Sonoma State, Levi Frankland joined Joe Wall in 20–20–20 Club, comprised of those who have scored 20-plus points in three consecutive games. Wall did it to open the season, Nov. 11–18.

MOVIN' ON UP… With 21 points in Thursday's win at Sonoma State, Levi Frankland moved up to the No. 25 spot on the Otter career scoring list with 527 points in just 39 games. Including his two seasons at Notre Dame (Ohio), he has 1,226 points in his collegiate career, a mark that would rank No. 3 all–time in CSUMB history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 21. REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 6. ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 4. BLOCKS: Ameere Britton 2. STEALS: Joe Wall 2.

THE LAST WORD… "If you like pretty, free flowing, basketball that probably wasn't the game for you. But if you appreciate toughness and teamwork, our guys displayed that in bunches tonight. I'm incredibly proud of them for sticking together when it wasn't going well and making enough winning plays to come away with the win." — CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their 2–game trip of the Northern California coast with a visit to Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday (Jan. 28). Tip-off in Lumberjack Arena will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
