McManus Brace Leads Otter Women Over Coyotes

Otter defense makes McManus goals stand up In 2–0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) scored twice, including one just 100 seconds after the match began, and a stout defensive effort made that stand up as Cal State Monterey Bay shutout visiting Cal State San Bernardino 2–0 Friday evening at Cardinale Stadium.

McManus's brace, her second of the season, helped CSUMB improve to 4–3–3 overall and 1–1–1 in CCAA play. San Bernardino fell to 5–3–1 and 1–1–1 with the loss.

The early goal belied what quickly became a defensive battle as the teams combined for just seven shots over the first half. Both teams brought a bit more pressure after the break, with the Otters putting five shots on frame in the second half while the Coyotes earned five corners.

It wasn't until McManus found the back of the net again in the 74th minute that Otter fans could breathe easier. San Bernardino managed two shots and three corners in the 10 minutes following the second score, but that proved to be the last Coyote hurrah.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters successfully defended a San Bernardino corner in the 85th minute. The Coyotes wouldn't sniff the goal for the balance of the match.

BRACE YOURSELF… Not only was the brace by Amelia McManus her second of the season it was the third of her career (including a hat trick last season against Holy Names). McManus now has scored in four of her 27 collegiate appearances and in three of those games she has recorded multiple goals.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Maleni Morales earned her fifth clean sheet of the season in Friday 2–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino. That ties her for third on the Otter list for shutouts in a single season. Next up is Melissa Moen, who had six shutouts in 2003. Stephanie Busch owns the Otter record with eight in 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus 2; ASSISTS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 1; POINTS: Amelia McManus 4; SHOTS: Tiger Rendon/Jasmine Safarians 3; SAVES: Maleni Morales 4.

THE LAST WORD… "There's nothing better than a conference win, under the lights, playing in such an amazing venue at Cardinale Stadium. We were defensively organized against a talented team and were able to finish our chances. It was a great team win. " – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos Sunday (Oct. 2) at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. as the opener of doubleheader action.
