Otters Upend No. 20 Colorado School of Mines

CSUMB opens 2022 campaign with first–ever road victory against a nationally-ranked foe

GOLDEN, Colo. — Lightning struck — literally — for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team Friday when the Otters picked up a big result with a 2–1 victory over No. 20 Colorado School of Mines at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
The match was the season–opener for both teams.

The win was the first for the Otters over a nationally–ranked team since they defeated then No. 22 Chico State 2–0 in 2013 season finale. It marked CSUMB's first–ever road win at a nationally–ranked opponent.

The Otters broke the ice Friday when freshman Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from Julian Contreras (Watsonville HS). Mines equalized early in the second half, but the Otters got the match–winner five minutes from time when Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) found the back of the net.

It turned out not to be five minutes from time, however, when a lightning storm passed through the area after Guerrero's goal, causing a lengthy delay. When they match resumed, CSUMB parried a pair of Mines shots in the final four minutes to seal the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Freshman goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff denied a Tristan Semelsberger attempt with 67 seconds remaining in regulation to preserve the 2–1 lead.

FOR OPENERS… The Otters improved to 9–11–5 in season openers with Friday's 2–1 win at Colorado School of Mines. CSUMB is 2–0–1 in three openers under Head Coach Graeme Jaap.

THIRD TIME'S A CHARM… Friday's 2–1 win at No. 20 Colorado School of Mines was CSUMB's third victory all–time over a nationally–ranked NCAA Division II opponent. The Otters beat No. 22 Chico State 2–0 in 2018 and then No. 7 Sonoma State 2–0 in 2009. CSUMB is 1–1–2 against nationally–ranked opponents under Graeme Jaap.

BLICKENSTAFF EARNS HIS FIRST W… Freshman goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) earned his first collegiate victory Friday in relief of Matthias Milton. Blickenstaff allowed one goal and made three saves in 64 minutes of action.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Miguel Guerrero/Mason Ward 1; ASSISTS: Julian Contreras 1; POINTS: Miguel Guerrero/Mason Ward 2; SHOTS: Roberto Banegas/Mason Ward 3; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 3.

THE LAST WORD… "The guys played very well in the first half. We created a few really good chances and scored a good goal into the bargain against a good Mines side. We felt we dropped off performance wise in the second half, but defended really well and Miggy scored a really good goal to put us ahead late. Overall, really happy with the result and the leadership on the field to hold on after the delay. We have another tough game on Sunday to look forward to at Metro." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their Rocky Mountain roadtrip Sunday in Denver when they face Metro State for a 1 p.m. (MDT) kickoff.
