Otter Open Campaign With Scoreless Draw Versus Biola

Maleni Morales makes five saves to earn the shutout

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team opened its 2022 campaign by playing Biola University to a scoreless draw Thursday afternoon in Seaside. It was the season–opener for both sides.

The match was fairly evenly played, with both goalkeepers called to action just a handful of times. Biola out–shot CSUMB 7–6 and put five attempts on frame to two for the Otters.

CSUMB senior Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College) was up to the challenge each time the Eagles called. Her biggest stop came in the 70th minute when flew to her right to tip a speculative effort from Frances Andrade over the bar to keep the match scoreless.

Biola keeper Anna Boyer came up with a big stop of her own seven minutes from time, stretching out all the way to the left post to deny a curling effort from distance by freshman Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS).

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maleni Morales stopped a soft attempt by Madi Reeves in the 89th minute. It proved to be the last shot of the match for either team.

FOR OPENERS… Thursday's draw was the second season–opening tie in CSUMB women's soccer history. The Otters are now 10–10–2 all–time in season openers and 3–1–1 in such games under Head Coach Laura VanWart.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Maleni Morales earned her second collegiate clean sheet in Thursday's draw with Biola. Her first shutout came last season in a win over Holy Names University (Sept. 16, 2021).

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Eight players made their Otter debuts Thursday against Biola, including four freshman. Tiger Rendon was the lone newcomer and lone freshman to earn a starting nod this afternoon.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Amelia McManus 2; SAVES: Maleni Morales 5.

THE LAST WORD… "Our program was so grateful to open our fall season in such an amazing stadium. Biola was a well-organized and tough opponent. While we are disappointed to not walk away with the win, there were some really bright moments that we can build on for the future." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their next two contests, beginning with a nonconference showdown at CCAA rival Stanislaus State Sunday (Aug. 28). Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
