Otters Open Season With Dual Shutouts At Concordia Kickoff classic

Jensen Main and Cassie Gasper each throw 2–hitters to beat Holy Names, Azusa Pacific

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball got its 2022 schedule off with a rousing start by sweeping Holy Names University and Azsua Pacific in a pair of shutout victories Friday at the Concordia Kickoff Classic in Irvine.
The Otters run–ruled HNU, 9–0, in five innings in the afternoon before posting a 4–0 win over APU Friday night.

Senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sac State) struck out seven Hawks in five innings of 2–hit ball to win the opener. Not to be out–done, junior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) threw a 7–inning 2–hitter of her own, striking out six, to win the nightcap.

Junior Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) led the 10–hit Otter attack again Holy Names, going 3–for–3 with a pair of doubles, three runs and three RBI. Freshman Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) and sophomore Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS) also doubled in the game while freshman Oli Perez (Ceres HS) made her first collegiate hit a triple.

A Jessica Cross (Simi Valley HS) RBI ground out in the third drove in the only run the Otters would need in the win over APU. A 2–run double by Alcayaga added insurance in the fourth.

Freshmen Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) and Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) — Ally's twin sister — led the offense with two hits apiece. Burt and Ally Alcayaga provided the punch with a pair of doubles.

THE HOLY NAMES GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt doubled home a pair in the first inning. With Jensen Main in complete control, the Hawks never threatened.

THE APU GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga doubled home two in the fourth inning to extend the Otter lead to 3–0. The APU offense managed just an infield single over the final four frames against Cassie Gasper.

FOR OPENERS… With Friday 9–0 win over Holy Names, Otter softball improved to 10–6 in season openers dating to its inaugural campaign in 2006. CSUMB is 2–0 for the second consecutive season and the eighth time in 16 seasons overall.

A CLEAN SLATE… Otter softball has accomplished much in its relatively brief 16–year history, but it broke new ground with Friday wins over Holy Names (9–0) and Azusa Pacific (4–0). It marked the first time in program history that the Otter pitchers have tossed consecutive shutouts to open a season.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… The Otters started five freshmen in the season–opener against Holy Names: Jessica Cross, Ashley Honorio, Hannah Jacobsen, Ally Alcayaga and Oli Perez.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Saturday with games against Montana State–Billings (11:30 a.m.) and Hawaii Pacific (7:15 p.m.).

GO OTTERS!
