Gators Prevent Otter Sweep With New Year’s Eve Win

Career afternoon for Jailen Nelson not enough to prevent 60-51 setback

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Baysophomore Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) enjoyed a career–best afternoon, wasn't enough to stop San Francisco State from earning a split of the season series with a 60–51 New Year's Eve decision Saturday afternoon in The Swamp.

Nelson led the Otters with career highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, but S.F. State corralled an opponent season–high 52 rebounds to snap a 3–game losing streak to CSUMB dating back to last season.

The Otters never led Saturday, but kept things close until  a 7–0 run to end the half gave the Gators their first double–digit lead at 30–20. CSUMB pulled to within one early in the second half and kept the deficit at two possessions or less until an Eche Okeke layup made it 64–58 with 1:05 remaining.

In addition to Nelson, Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland) scored 16 points in 25 minutes off of the bench.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Toby Okwuokei made the first of two free throws to give SFSU a 67–59 lead with 26 seconds remaining.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE THE FUN… Not only did Jailen Nelson record career highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, he completed the second double–double of his collegiate career as well. His previous double–double came with 14 points and 10 boards in a win at (then) Humboldt state on Dec. 4, 2021.

THE 20–POINT CLUB ADDS A MEMBER… Jailen Nelson became the third Otter to score 20+ points in a game this season with his career–high 23 points at S.F. State Saturday. Joe Wall has done it five times and Jordan Archie has done it once.

CAN SOMEONE LEND A HAND? Despite making 26 field goals, the Otters were credited with just one assist. Freshman center Charles Johnston was ajudged the lone helper Saturday.

1,100 FOR FRANKLAND… With 16 points Saturday at S.F. state, Levi Frankland has reached exactly 1,100 points in his collegiate career. That mark would be No. 3 in the CSUMB record book. He has scored 401 points (12.5 ppg) in 32 games as a Otter.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 23. REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 11. ASSISTS: Charles Johnston 1. BLOCKS: Jordan Archie/Jerald Williams 1. STEALS: Levi Frankland 2

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to th friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to kickoff 2023 by hosting Cal Poly Huymboldt. Thursday (Jan. 5). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
