Wall’s Double–Double Leads Otters Past Nanooks

Joe Wall goes for 25 and 10 as CSUMB holds on for 80-77 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Seattle Univ.) posted his first collegiate double–double with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a thrilling 80–77 win over Alaska Fairbanks on Day 1 of the 2022 Otter Invitational Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Wall's totals both were career highs, and the Otters needed all of it to hold off the pesky Nanooks. CSUMB also got 14 points apiece from Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) and J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) and nine assists from sophomore guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS).

The Otters owned the biggest lead of the night at 41–32 thanks to a Wall 3–ball in the opening minutes of the second half. Each time CSUMB threatened to pull away, however, Alaska responded, and neither team led by more than three points over the final six minutes of regulation.

In fact, the lead changed hands seven times in the final five minutes until a Frankland jumper gave the Otters the lead for good at 78–77 with 12 seconds remaining. Nelson drew a charge on the ensuing Alaska possession and a pair of Otter free throws accounted for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jailen Nelson rebounded a missed Demarcus Hall-Scriven 3–point attempt with one second remaining in regulation.

20–20–20 CLUB… Joe Wall has made quite an entrance for CSUMB, scoring 20–plus points in his first three games as an Otter. He is the first player in CSUMB history to accomplish that feat. He is the first Otter to score 20 in three consecutive games since Jordan May did it from Dec. 20 – Jan. 6 last season. In case you're wondering, the last Otter to pull off that feat in four consecutive games was Ryan Nitz, who did it from Nov. 21–Dec. 4, 2015.

WE LOVE THE 80s: Follow last Saturday's rare high–scoring loss by CSUMB, the 80s once again proved to be incredibly friendly territory for the Otters. With Friday's 80–77 win over Alaska, CSUMB now owns a 54–10 (.844) mark in its last 64 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

NINE DIMES: Jailen Nelson passed a career–high nine assists in CSUMB's win over Alaska. He becomes the 10th player in Otters history to accomplish the feat. The last player to do it was Tommy Kramer against Saint Martin's University on Nov. 27, 2021.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joe Wall 25; REBOUNDS: Joe Wall 10; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 9; BLOCKS: Joe Wall 2; STEALS: Levi Frankland/Joe Wall 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close play at the 2022 Otter Invitational again Colorado School of Mines Saturday at 5 p.m. Mines defeated Cal State East Bay in Friday's opening game, 77–71.
