Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Eight Is Enough For Otters In Season–Ending Rout Of Toros

Nayeli Sandoval Gallo hat trick leads the way in 8–0 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive season, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team narrowly missed a trip to the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Otters took their frustrations out on visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, handing the Toros their most lopsided defeat ever in an 8–0 rout Thursday afternoon in Cardinale Stadium.

Senior Nayeli Sandoval Gallo (Bloomington HS/San Bernardino Valley College) got the ball rolling by finishing a Linda Nigg (Oklahoma City/Deer Creek HS) pass in the third minute. The floodgates opened soon thereafter.

It took Sandoval Gallo another 27 minutes to complete the third hat trick in Otter history with back-to-back goals 1:40 apart midway through the first half. Christina Palacios (Long Beach Poly), Elizabeth Kobrine (Irvine/Northwood HS) and Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) each added her first goal of 2022. Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) chipped in her team leading eighth to go along with three helpers.

Senior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) was the recipient of the scoring largesse. She was credited with two saves but rarely was tested in earning her seventh shutout of the season.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Nayeli Sandoval Gallo completed her hat trick in the 30th minute to put the Otters up 4–0.

THAT'S A GREAT TRICK… Nayeli Sandoval Gallo became just the third player in Otter women's soccer history to record a hat trick with her 3–goal outburst Thursday versus Dominguez Hills. She joins Amelia McManus (vs. Holy Names in 2021) and Sierra Townsend (vs. Humboldt State in 2014) in that exclusive circle of scorers.

McMANUS LENDS A HAND IN RECORD–SETTING FASHION… With a team–leading eight goals this season, Amelia McManus is more known for scoring goals than setting them up. In Thursday's win over Dominguez Hills, McManus found it better to give than receive, setting a CSUMB record by passing three assists. The previous best was two set several times, last by Nayeli Sandoval Gallo in a win over San Francisco State on Oct. 6.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Christina Palacios and Elizabeth Kobrine not only scored their first goals of the season, they scored their first collegiate goals in Thursday's win over Dominguez Hills.

EIGHT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH… The eight goals scored by CSUMB in Thursday's win over Dominguez Hills tied the school record set last September in an 8–0 win over Holy Names University. Prior to that, the record had been six set in wins over Saint Martin's (6–1 on Aug. 31, 2017) and Holy Names (6–0 on Sept. 6, 2017).

KEEP IT CLEAN… Maleni Morales earned her seventh shutout of 2022 with Thursday's 8–0 win over Dominguez Hills. She finishes the season No. 2 on the Otter single–season shutout list. Stephanie Busch own the CSUMB record with eight clean sheets in 2018.

OTTERS ARE WINNERS AGAIN… With Thursday's win, the Otters finish 2022 with a 7–6–5 record for the season. It marks the first time in program history the team has finished with winning records in consecutive seasons.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 3; ASSISTS: Amelia McManus 3; POINTS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 6; SHOTS: Linda Nigg/Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 3; SAVES: Maleni Morales 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Today's game was a true tribute to our senior class and the style of soccer they have brought to CSUMB. The team dominated Dominguez Hills  in every phase of play.  Five seniors scored today, including a hat truck for Nayeli. On top of that, the team dominated possession the entire game and earned the shutout. I couldn't be prouder, and, while we are gutted to not be in the CCAA tournament, the future is bright. Thanks to all of our past players for paving the way for future success." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart
