Uribe’s Golden Goal Lifts Otters Over No. 13 Sonoma

CSUMB knocks off nationally ranked Seawolves for the third consecutive time, 2–1

SEASIDE, Calif. — Brenda Uribe owes much of her success to an unparalleled work rate. That tenacity paid huge dividends Sunday as her singular effort in overtime resulted in a golden goal for Cal State Monterey Bay and a 2–1 win over No. 13 Sonoma State at the Otter Sports Complex.

Uribe, a senior from East Palo Alto, went strong for the ball after Sonoma goalkeeper Phoebe Barnes punched away a Mitsy Ramirez corner. The Otter forward then maneuvered through a pair of Sonoma defenders before blasting a low shot to the far post that eluded a diving attempt by Barnes  to end the match.

The win proved to be huge for the Otters, who find themselves right in the mix for a spot in the 6–team CCAA Championship Tournament. The Otters (6–3–3, 3–2–1 CCAA) occupy fifth place with 10 points, just three points out of second with five matches remaining. Sonoma (10–2–0, 5–1–0) leads the CCAA with 15 points.

The Otters opened the scoreline in the 16th minute when a strong run along the endline by Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park) opened Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) from short range. Sonoma responded on the half hour when beautiful free kick from Julia Pritchard resulted in a tap-in for Krissy Keller.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Brenda Uribe's strike from outside the box ended the affair late in the first overtime.

GIANT SEAWOLF KILLERS… Sunday's win over No. 13 Sonoma State marks the third consecutive time the Otters have defeated a nationally ranked Sonoma State squad. The Otters defeated then No. 24 Sonoma State 1–0 on Oct. 27, 2018. The Otters beat then No. 10 Sonoma 1–0 in overtime on Sept. 15, 2017.

MOVIN' ON UP… With her assist on Sierra Levy's goal in the first half, Jasmine Safarians moves up to No. 17 on the Otter career points list with 16, tying Jessica Martelle and Eva Arzola for that spot. Her next point will tie Lisa Wiener for 16th.

MOVIN' ON UP, PART II… Jasmine Safarians now has six career assists, tied with Sierra Levy for No. 6 on the career assist list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sierra Levy/Brenda Uribe 1; ASSISTS: Jasmine Safarians 1; POINTS: Sierra Levy/Brenda Uribe 2; SHOTS: Brenda Uribe 5; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 5.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a great win against the best team we've seen all season. The momentum shifted back and forth all game. We started really well, with Sierra scoring a beautiful goal assisted by Jasmine.  At the end of the day, we had some tired legs and had to really battle.  But we defended with heart and gave time for Brenda to score a tremendous goal in OT." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Oct. 22). The women will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action.
