Big Second Half Lifts Otters Over Sonoma State, 3–0

Goals by Guerrero, Hernandez and O’Mahony lead the way

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay broke open what had been a tight game with a big second half to defeat Sonoma State 3–0 Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win keeps CSUMB (6–2–4, 2–2–2 CCAA) in the CCAA Tournament hunt with eight points, good enough for sixth place. The loss is a huge blow for Sonoma (5–7–1, 1–4–1), which falls four points behind CSUMB with five matches remaining.

The teams combined to take three shots apiece in the opening 45 minutes, but the pace changed quickly after the restart. It took the Otters less than 10 minutes to break the ice when Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) finished a flick from Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) with a sure finish.

Barely three minutes later, Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) drew a penalty after being taken down in the box. Hernandez stepped up to the spot and buried his eighth goal of the season.

With the Seawolves on their heels, the Otters kept up the pressure and finally sealed the deal when Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) made a rare foray into the box and cleaned up a loose ball on the doorstep in the 77th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pedro Hernandez scored from the spot just before the hour to give the Otters a 2–0 lead. Sonoma never came close to challenging that lead.

MOVIN' ON UP… With his helper on the Miguel Guerrero goal, Adrian Rebollar moved past Nathan Northup into sole possession of the No. 5 spot on the Otter career points list with 46. He needs five more to pass Walmer Martinez for No. 4.

WELCOME TO THE TOP 10… With his team–leading eighth goal in Sunday's win over Sonoma State, Pedro Hernandez moves into a tie for the No. 10 spot in career goal with 14. Nathan Northup owns the No. 9 spot with 15.

WELCOME TO THE TOP 10, PART II… With three points (one goal, one assist) in Sunday's win over Sonoma State Pedro Hernandez now owns sole possession of the No. 10 spot in career points with 33.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Miguel Guerrero/Pedro Hernandez/Colin O'Mahony 1; ASSISTS: Pedro Hernandez/Antonio Ordoñez/Adrian Rebollar 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 3; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 3; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We felt like the guys played well up until the final third in the first half, we just lacked that killer instinct. In the second half, we played some really good soccer and scored some good goals. I'm happy with the clean sheet and guys' toughness." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Oct. 22). The men will kickoff at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action.
