Arms Are Strong But Bats Are Silent As Chico Takes Two

Cassie Gasper fans 10, Hayley Fein eight but Otters fall 1–0 and 4–0

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got to strong pitching performances, but the Otters bats were silent as Chico State swept a CCAA–opening doubleheader, 1–0 (9 inn.) and 4–0 Friday at the Chico Softball Field.

Newcomer Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) fanned 10 batters for the second consecutive game in the opener. Things turned against her in the ninth inning when a hit batter and a 2–out, bases–loaded walk allowed Chico to escape with the 1–0 win.

In game two, senior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) struck out eight, but the Wildcats pushed across single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. That proved more than adequate as Chico pitching held the Otters to just three hits — all singles — for the second consecutive game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kristin Worley drew a bases–loaded walk with two outs in the ninth inning to give Chico the 1–0 win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… the Otters stranded Aubrey Cousins after her single in the sixth inning. She proved to be CSUMB's last base runner of the game.

A PAIR OF 10s… Cassie Gasper isn't the first Otter to fan 10 or more batters in a game twice in one season — Diane Ortiz (2010) and Lindsey Clarkson (2014 and 2015) — both beat her to that punch. What she is is the first Otter ever to fan 10 or more batters in consecutive appearances. She also struck out 10 in a win over Menlo College on Feb. 2.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Junior pitcher Ellie Bauer made her first appearance of the season in Game 2 Friday at Chico. She struck out the only batter she faced.

SHE'S A HIT… Alyssa Burt ran her season–opening hitting streak to six games with a knock in both ends of Friday's doubleheader. She is now hitting .474 (9–for–19).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Cassie Gasper (L [2–1], 8.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 10 K, 4 BB); Hayley Fein (L [2–1], 5.2 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 8 K, 4 BB); Nikki Jones (2x5, SB), Alyssa Burt (2x7).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at Chico State with a doubleheader against the Wildcats starting Saturday at 11.
