Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Josh Lewis (@jlewwx) and Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Ferguson, Johnson Lead Otters To 103–97 Win At L.A.

Andrew Ferguson scores 22, Jahvon Johnson 21 in record–setting win

NOTE: It was originally noted that the 103 points were a record against an NCAA Division II opponent in a regulation game. It was later determined that a 107–96 win at Cal State Stanislaus was, in fact, a regulation game and not an overtime game, making that the record. This has been updated to reflect that change.

LOS ANGELES — Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia/Univ. of San Diego) and Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) each went over 20 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to its most prolific output since the 2012 season to upend Cal State L.A. 103–97 Thursday night at the Cal State L.A. gym.

Ferguson scored a game–high 22 points and Johnson chipped in 21 as CSUMB led for more than 30 minutes, including almost the entire second half. Damian Wilson (Inglewood/Taft HS) nearly joined them in the 20–point club, finishing with 19.

The 103 points nearly were an Otter record for points against an NCAA Division II opponent in a regulation game. Thursday's game marked the second time the Otters ever passed the century mark in such a game.

Ferguson, Johnson and Wilson were far from the only Otter stars in this game. Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) scored 17 points and J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) added nine, including a pair of clutch free throws to halt a late L.A. rally.

Although the Otters led for almost all of the second half, they didn't pull away until Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) completed a 4–point play as part of a 12–2 run that gave CSUMB its biggest lead, 93–77. The Golden Eagles battled back, cutting the lead to five in the closing seconds before a Wilson free throw with four seconds remaining accounted for the final score.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… J.R. Schilling made the first of two free throws with 13 second remaining to give the Otters a 101–94 lead.

THE CENTURY CLUB… CSUMB's 103–point explosion marked the first time the Otters passed the century mark since a 108–100 overtime loss at Humboldt State in 2013. They are the most points the Otters scored in any game since beating Pacifica University, 104–52, in The Kelp Bed on Nov. 11, 2012. It's the 13th time in school history that the Otters have scored 100 or more points in a game.

NEAR RECORD BREAKER… The 103 points scored in Thursday night's win at Cal State L.A. nearly broke the Otter record for points in regulation against an NCAA Division II foe. The record remains 107 in a 107–96 win at Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 19, 2007.

20–20 VISION… Andrew Ferguson (22) and Jahvon Johnson (21) became the first Otter duo to score 20 points in the same game since Johnson (23) and Koen Sapwell (22) turned the trick in a 78–76 win at UC San Diego on Dec. 8, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 22; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson/Damian Wilson 6; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 5; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Damian Wilson 1; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 3.

THE LAST WORD… ""I normally prefer not to talk about individual players because basketball is a team sport. However, tonight was all about Jared Williams. If people knew what he and his family have been fighting, only then could they truly appreciate how amazing his contribution was. Obviously, it was a great night for the team. But, when I look back on this, I'll think of him." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their quick trip to the greater Los Angeles area with a visit to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday (Feb. 8). The men will tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
