Otters Open 2020 Campaign with Sweep of Menlo, UAV

Otters down Menlo 7–2, Antelope Valley 11–1

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team kicked off its 2020 campaign with a pair of victories, defeating Menlo College 7–2 and the University of Antelope Valley 11–1 Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Pitchers Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and Cassie Gasper (Merced/Missouri) shined in the circle, combining to allow just nine hits and three runs — all unearned — in a pair of complete game victories. Fein fanned seven in the opener versus Menlo while Gasper struck out seven in a 5–inning, mercy rule win over UAV.

Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) doubled in the opener as the Otters scored in each of the first four innings to pull away early. Fein doubled and Aubrey Cousins (San Diego/Del Lago Academy) hit a pair of two baggers as the Otters raced to a 7–0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap.
 

THE MENLO GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt doubled to center field to plate a pair and run the Otter lead to 7–2 in the fourth inning.

THE ANTELOPE VALLEY GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Pinch–hitter Kassidy Pilpil sent a hard shot through the left side to score Nikki Jones and cap a 7–run first inning.

FOR OPENERS… Saturday's 7–2 win over Menlo College made it seven consecutive season–opening wins for CSUMB dating back to the 2014 season. CSUMB is 9–6 all–time in season openers dating back to its debutante season in 2006.

FOR OPENERS, PART II… Including all games played on opening day, CSUMB is now 20–11–1 on the first day on the season.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Fans needed a scorecard to keep track of their favorite players Saturday as 10 different Otters made their CSUMB debuts. Newcomers who also made their first collegiate starts Saturday included freshmen Jessica Cross, Madasyn Samora, Ella Gibson and Madison Neff in the opener versus Menlo. Cabrillo College transfer Jamie Sugimoto made her first collegiate start in the nightcap versus UAV. Cassie Gasper made her first Otter start versus UAV but was a frontline starter at the University of Missouri as a sophomore in 2019.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their season–opening home round robin with Menlo College and Antelope Valley Sunday. The Otters will play Antelope Valley at 1:30 p.m. and Menlo College at 4 p.m.
