Big Final Game From Turner Not Quite Enough At San Marcos

Senior Chris Turner scores a career–high 21 points in his final collegiate game

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — A big final collegiate game from senior Chris Turner (San Jose/Pioneer HS) wasn't quite enough to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a win in its season finale Saturday afternoon. Turner scored a career–high 21 points in his Otter swan song but Cal State San Marcos held on late for a 90–84 win at the CSUSM Sports Center.

Turner, who scored his 21 points in just 19 minutes off the bench, came out on fire, draining his first three shots from long range to help CSUMB climb out of an early 8–point hole. The Otters built a 10–point lead of their own before a seesaw second half in which the teams played through four ties and nine lead changes.

CSUMB took its last lead at 84–83 on a Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) 3–pointer with 50 seconds to play. San Marcos regained the lead with 33 seconds remaining then made 5–of–6 from the line in the final 20 seconds to put the game on ice.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Bryce Sloan made a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to account for the final margin.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN… The Otters made 10 3–pointers Saturday at San Marcos to just miss claiming the No. 2 spot on the CSUMB single–season list. They finished with 242 threes this season, three shy of the 1998–99 team total of 245. CSUMB set the record with 254 treys in 2017–18.

SAPWELL LEADS THE BOMB SQUAD… Sophomore guard Koen Sapwell made his 55th 3–pointer of the season Saturday at San Marcos, putting him in the No. 11 spot for 3–pointers made in a season. Though just a sophomore, Sapwell already ranks No. 10 in Otter history with 101 career treys.

JOHNSON LENDS A HAND… Jahvon Johnson will enter his senior season ranked No. 4 on the Otter career assist list with 206 helpers. Alex Fertig (236) and Brandon Ward (253) are the next targets for him to hit in his senior season.

JOHNSON ON POINT… Jahvon Johnson will begin his senior season ranked No. 11 on the Otter career scoring list with 872 points. He needs 128 points to become the sixth player in Otter history to score 1,000 career points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Chris Turner 21; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti/Jared Williams 8; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 7; BLOCKS: J.R. Schilling/Jared Williams 1; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's game brought to a close the 2018–19 Otter Basketball season.
