Otters Just Miss Upset At CCAA Leading Cal State East Bay

Otters have a chance to win in the final minute, but Pioneers escape, 80–75

HAYWARD, Calif. — Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay narrowly missed a huge upset Saturday afternoon, falling late at CCAA–leading Cal State East Bay, 80–75, in Pioneer Gym.

CSUMB got 19 points in 22 minutes off the bench from junior forward Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) and 18 points and eight rebounds from freshman forward Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS). Sparked by their efforts, the Otters led for nearly 30 minutes and still led by 11 points deep into the second half.

The Otters grudgingly yielded the lead at 62–60 with 6:44 remaining in regulation. They came back to retake the lead three more times down the stretch and it stayed a one possession game into the final minute.

East Bay took a four point lead at 76–72, but CSUMB pulled back to within one a on Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) 3–pointer with 43 seconds to play. CSUMB got the ball back with a chance to take the lead with 36 seconds remaining and with a chance to tie with 17 second left, but couldn't convert their final opportunities, allowing East Bay to escape.

 

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Juwan Anderson made a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give East Bay an 80–75 lead.

JAHVON AMONGST THE 20 MOST GENEROUS… Junior guard Jahvon Johnson passed six assists Saturday at East Bay, giving him 76 for the season. He passed four players to tie Alex Fertig's 2015–16 season total for No. 17 on the Otter single–season list.

MORE JAHVON GENEROSITY… Jahvon Johnson's six assists Saturday at East Bay give him 199 for his career. He is looking to become just the fourth player in Otter history to pass 200 career assists.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their season–ending 3–game roadtrip at No. 2 ranked UC San Diego Thursday (Feb. 28) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
