Otters Finish With Flair Score Late In 1–1 Draw At Chico

Jasmine Safarians scores the equalizer with three ticks left in regulation

CHICO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team finished its 2019 season in style when sophomore Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) scored a goal for the ages with three seconds remaining in regulation to help the Otters draw with Chico State, 1–1 Saturday evening at Chico's University Soccer Stadium.

Safarians late equalizer came thanks to some impressive build–up work from Melissa Wilson (Campolindo HS) and Sophia Zertuche (Madera South HS/Fresno CC). Wilson fed Zertuche, who carried past a defender down the left wing. Zertuche's cross rewarded a strong run from Safarians, who one–timed the pass from the penalty spot, beating Chico goalkeeper Eve Miller to the left post.

The goal also rewarded a memorable effort in goal from junior Alyssa Noh (Aliso Niguel HS), who matched her career high with 13 saves. The only blemish came when Chico's Camille Lidster took advantage of a failed Otter clearance to score from the top of the box in the 16th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alyssa Noh punched aside a Chico cross in traffic in the 110th minute to snuff the final chance for either team.

FINISHING WITH FLAIR… The last–gasp goal by Jasmine Safarians made it two seasons in a row that the Otters have ended the season in dramatic fashion. In 2018, Melissa Wilson converted from the penalty spot in overtime to give the Otters a season–ending 1–0 win at No. 24 Sonoma State.

13 IS A LUCKY NUMBER… Alyssa Noh's 13 saves have more significance that just being her career high. They also tied for the No. 2 spot on the Otter list for saves in a match. The last time an Otter recorded 13 saves in a match, you ask? Well that came when Stephanie Busch made 13 saves in the aforementioned 1–0 win at Sonoma State to close the 2018 season.

SETTING A NEW STANDARD… Saturday's tie leaves the Otters with an 8–8–2 record for the 2019 season. After never finishing .500 or above in their previous 14 seasons of NCAA Division II play, the Otters have finished .500 in each of the last two. They were 7–7–3 in 2018

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Jasmine Safarians 1; ASSISTS: Sophia Zertuche 1; POINTS: Jasmine Safarians 2; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 5; SAVES: Alyssa Noh 13.

THE LAST WORD… "Today was the example of persistence paying off. The team stayed committed to keep creating chances, trusting that the goal would come. It's been the character of the program all season, and it rang true today.'" – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's match at Chico State concluded the 2019 CSUMB women's soccer season.
