Otters Go The Distance In Epic Comeback Win Over Sonoma State

Down 0–2 and 11–17, CSUMB rallies behind 16 kills, seven blocks by Chandler McKean

SEASIDE, Calif. — Starring into the abyss of an almost certain 3–set defeat, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team dug deep into that reserve only teams with true heart possess to rise up and stun visiting Sonoma State 25–27, 19–25, 25–22, 25–23, 15–10 Tuesday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (8–6, 3–4 CCAA) not only trailed two sets to none, it faced a 17–11 deficit in the third set as well. But Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) served a 5–point run to get the Otters back into the match before four Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) kills broke a 19–19 tie and gave the Otters new life.

The Otters eased away midway through the fourth set then held on for the 25–23 win to force the fifth. They began the deciding frame with a 5–1 bolt and never looked back.

Senior middle blocker Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) came on strong late and finished with 16 kills against just one error while collecting a match–high seven blocks. Tobin added a 14–kill, 11–dig double–double while Armstrong led the backline with 22 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Chandler McKean solo block on Amy Trephan capped a 5–1 run to open the fifth set. The Seawolves never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

GOING THE DISTANCE… The Otters played their first 5–set match of the season Tuesday versus Sonoma. It is the longest CSUMB has gone without playing a 5–setter since the 1997 squad played all 18 of its matches in three sets.

AN ALMOST ANNIVERSARY… CSUMB came back from 0–2 down to win a match for the first time since beating Sonoma State 18–25, 23–25, 25–22, 25–15, 15–12 on Sept. 24, 2016.

THE 800 CLUB… With 12 kills Tuesday night, Anela Visesio became the fifth player in Otter history to surpass 800 career kills (805).

BUILDING BLOCKS… With two blocks Tuesday night, Anela Visesio passed Kerri Sudarsana (2006–09) for No. 17 on the career blocks list with 131.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Chandler McKean 20.5; KILLS: Chandler McKean 16; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 7; ACES: Erica Chapa 3; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 20.

THE LAST WORD… "I am so proud of this team's resilience. No timeouts left in the third set…down two sets…down seven points and this team made a change. They committed to the little things and they never looked back. I was so impressed with our seniors tonight, all six of them finding ways to help and make an impact. This is the team I've been looking for." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos Friday (Sept. 28) in The Kelp Bed. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
