Late Goal Sinks Otters Again In 2–1 Loss At No. 14 UCSD

Luis Lopez gives Otters the lead before Tritons score two late goals

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team continues to push the nation's top teams to the brink, only to see victory slip away late. Friday night, No. 14 UC San Diego rallied for two goals late in the second half to hand the Otters a 2–1 setback at the Triton Soccer Stadium.

Juniors Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) and Luis Lopez (De Anza HS) gave the Otters a leg up seven minutes after halftime when Martinez stole a ball in the offensive third and fed a short pass to Lopez that he finished for his second goal of 2018. But UCSD rallied with two goals in a 10–minute span, scoring in the 70th and 80th minutes to take the lead.

CSUMB had the final two shots of the match but couldn't find the equalizer.

THE MATCH WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Steve Lopez's attempt at the tying goal went wide with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

GIANT (ALMOST) KILLERS… For the second time in three matches, the Otters came within minutes of upending a nationally ranked opponent (they fell to No. 8 Colorado School of Mines 2–1 in overtime on Sept. 7). CSUMB was looking for its first win over a ranked opponent since beating then No. 22 Chico on Nov. 3 , 2013.

SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR… All three of CSUMB's losses have come by a single goal, including two in overtime.

NOT SO FINE… San Diego bills itself as America's Finest City, but its has been anything but to the Otters. CSUMB is now 0–6–2 all–time when playing opponents in San Diego County.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez 1; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez 1; POINTS: Luis Lopez 2; SHOTS: Luis Lopez's/Steve Lopez/Walmer Martinez 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 4.

THE LAST WORD… "Great effort. San Diego are a very well organized team and we managed to create some good chances. Great effort, cruel loss, but we move on. " – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their San Diego excursion with a match at Cal State San Marcos Sunday (Sept. 16). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
