SEASIDE, Calif. — Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) came up with another clutch performance to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a season–ending split with Stanislaus State Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB took the opener 3–1 before falling a run short in the nightcap, 4–3.
After throwing a 1–hitter and contributing three hits in a 5–0 win Friday, Fein scattered three hits and hit the game–tying home run to lead the way Saturday. She picked up her 17th win of the season (17–15) in the complete–game effort.
Sophomore
Vanessa Garcia (Newhall/Heritage Christian HS) followed Fein's homer with a pinch–hit, 2–out, 2–run double to break a 1–1 tie in the fifth. That was all Fein needed as she didn't allow a hit over the final five innings.
Senior
Julia Garcia (Oxnard HS/Ventura College) drove home
Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) with a 2–out single to stake CSUMB to a 1–0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. But Stanislaus tied it with a run in the second before driving starter
Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Garden Grove HS) from the game with three more runs in the fourth.
Junior
Rosalia Keirns (Fontana/Claremont HS) put out the fire, facing just one batter over the minimum over 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. That gave the Otter offense a chance to make it close.
A Fein sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the sixth brought home the second Otter run and moved runners to second and third with two outs. Garcia followed by ripping a single to right field to score one more, but
Savanna Salyer Kovacs was gunned down at the plate trying to tie the game on the play.
A leadoff walk, a sac bunt and a long fly ball got
Nikki Jones (Cordova HS) to third base with two outs in the seventh, but Warrior third baseman Maya Yoshiura made a diving catch in foul territory to rob
Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) of a chance to tie the game.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Vanessa Garcia's 2–run double made it 3–1 Otters in the fifth inning. With
Hayley Fein no–hitting Stanislaus over the final five innings, that was all she wrote.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… With
Nikki Jones at third representing the tying run, Stanislaus third baseman Maya Yoshiura made a diving catch in foul territory to end the game.
THE POWER IS BACK ON… The Otters suffered a bit of a power outage over the final two months of the season, hitting just one home run in their last 32 games entering the weekend. But they got a bit of a spark in the power department over the weekend, hitting six doubles, a triple and a home run in the 4–game series with Stanislaus.
THE POINT IS 25… CSUMB won its 25th game of the season Saturday versus Stanislaus. The Otters have won at least 25 games in seven consecutive seasons and in 10 of the 13 season since the program began in 2006. The Otters have never won fewer than the 20 games they won in their inaugural season of 2006.
THE FEIN LINE… Hayley Fein won her 17th game of the season Saturday afternoon, tying Diane Ortiz (2010) for the No. 7 spot on the Otter single–season list. Fein won 29 games (No. 2) as a freshman in 2017. Her 44 career wins already rank No. 4 on the CSUMB all–time list and are the most by an Otter through the first two seasons of her career.
SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODNIGHT… Saturday's games marked the final collegiate games for four Otter seniors: Assistant Coach
Madison Foulks, third baseman
Julia Garcia, center fielder
Joanna Perruccio and shortstop
Jayme Stark.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's doubleheader concluded the 2018 CSUMB softball season.
GO OTTERS!
