SEASIDE, Calif. — Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) allowed just three earned runs in a pair of complete game pitching performances to help Cal State Monterey Bay earn a split with No. 22 UC San Diego Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
Fein was a hard–luck loser in the opener, yielding just one earned run but dropping a 2–0 decision. She came back to fan six in the nightcap while driving in three runs at the plate in a 5–4 Otter win.
Game 1 was nothing less than incredibly well–played. UCSD used a leadoff triple by CCAA leading hitter Sherriah Harrington and a passed ball to score in the first inning. Mikaila Reyes hit her third homer of the season in the second.
That was it for scoring.
Fein retired the final 13 Tritons to give her offense a chance, but UCSD freshman Robyn Wampler fanned seven in a 3–hit shutout to earn the win.
An RBI ground ball by Fein and a 2–out RBI single by
Julia Garcia (Oxnard HS/Ventura College) gave CSUMB a quick 2–0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. UCSD came back to tie the game with two in the second and again at 3–3 in the fourth.
That set things up for Fein the clean–up hitter, who lined a 1–out double to the gap in right center to drive home
Marissa Hukkanen (Calavares HS) and
Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) to break the tie in the bottom of the fourth.
A 1–out walk and a 2–out single in the seventh pulled one run back for UCSD before Fein coaxed a ground ball from Kelsi Maday to end the game.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Robyn Wampler got
Savanna Salyer Kovacs, representing the tying run, to pop up for the final out.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein got Kelsey Maday to ground softly to short to end the game with the tying run on first.
